Recent Patient Comments

I’ve read that a lot of New Yorkers have bed bugs these days but I never thought it would happen to me! After realizing the problem I knew I needed treatment for the rash on my body. Dr. Fuzayloff just smiled when I told him my problem and prescribed medicine that cleared me right up. I also want to say that besides being totally cool, Dr. Fuzayloff’s prices were a lot cheaper than my new bed!

FAQs

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are a type of insect that live close to humans, birds or bats. They bite and feed on humans while they sleep or are in one position for an extended time. After feeding, they go into a hiding place for the day, this is where the females lay eggs. The eggs hatch between 4 and 10 days after being laid.  More bed bugs will lead to a greater infestation in your home. If you believe you have bed bugs, it is important to act very quickly.

Where are they found?

Bed bugs can be found all over the world. They are most often found in places like homes, apartment buildings, hotels, public transportation or movie theaters. If they are in your home, they usually hide during the day in mattress crevices, cushions, bed frames, curtains, clothing or walls. Females lay eggs in these hiding places.

What do bed bugs look like?

Bed bugs are small reddish brown insects with 6 legs. Their bodies are flat and oval-shaped. Adult bed bugs range from 5-7 mm in length, about the size of an apple seed. The eggs are white and just barely the size of 1 mm.  Bed bugs take 2 to 4 months to mature from an egg to an adult and can live for one year.

Where should I look for them?

If you suspect you have bed bugs you should look in the most likely hiding places: in mattress crevices, cushions, bed frames, curtains, clothing or walls.

What do the bites look like?

The bites usually appear as small, red bumps on exposed areas of skin like hands, feet, face, and neck. Although they may be centralized in one location, if a lot of skin is exposed throughout the night, there may be many areas covered in bites.

When will the bite go away?

The onset of redness and irritation around the bite occurs 1 to 10 days after the actual bite.  Once the bite appears, it usually heals within a week. They are very difficult to definitively distinguish from other bug bites such as fleas and mites.

When should I see a doctor?

If your bites are severe or cover a large part of your body, or if you are unsure they are from bed bugs, you should see a doctor.  Our doctors can help you pick an appropriate plan of treatment that may include topical corticosteroids, antihistamines, both, or other options.  These treatments only treat the bites from the bed bugs. In order to prevent any more bites, you need to hire a pest management professional to rid your home and belongings of the bed bugs.

How do I know for sure if I have them?

Bed bug bites are difficult to distinguish from other bug bites, so to know for sure it’s best to look around your home. If you find small brown or black marks or rust-colored smears on bedding or in crevices of your mattress or cushions, or the bed bugs themselves, you most likely have a bed bug infestation. Focus your attention on the area 10 to 20 feet around your bed, this is where they are most likely to hide. At this point, it’s best to call an exterminator to do an thorough investigation and let you know the next steps to get rid of them.

When do I call an exterminator?

If you have bites you think are from bed bugs, you should look around your home for traces of the bugs themselves. If you find small brown or black marks or rust-colored smears on bedding, crevices of your mattress or cushions, curtains or your bed frame you may have found the remnants of the bed bugs living in your home.  If you can find the bed bugs themselves, there are probably many more that you have not found. If you have found bed bugs, or the remnants of their life in your home, it’s best to call an exterminator.

If you even suspect that you may have bed bugs, it may be better to pay for the exterminator to investigate and exterminate any bed bugs before the infestation becomes worse.  The worse the infestation, the greater the inconvenience, cost and possible losses to you.

How can I get rid of them?

1. Call a pest management professional (exterminator). They will safely apply pesticides.

2. Wash your clothes, linens and towels in hot water and dry on the hottest setting. This will kill the bed bugs. Seal these in plastic bags until you are sure you are completely rid of bed bugs.

3. Get rid of clutter where bed bugs can hide.

4. Wipe off dead bugs, eggs and droppings with hot soapy water.

5. Vacuum any places that bed bugs could hide and throw away the vacuum bags after each use.

6. Enclose infested mattresses and box springs in a cover that is labeled “for bed bugs” for at least one year. You should periodically check for rips in the cover and tape them if they do occur.

7. Seal cracks in walls, baseboards and cabinets to prevent bed bugs from another apartment finding their way into your home again.

What do I do with my things?

1. Wash as much as you can in hot water and the hottest dryer setting. If something is not machine washable, but can be put in the dryer, do so at the hottest temperature setting for at least 20 minutes. This should kill any bed bugs. Seal the clean items in plastic bags until you are sure you are completely rid of bed bugs.

2. Enclose infested mattresses and box springs in a cover that is labeled “for bed bugs” for at least one year. You should periodically check for rips in the cover and tape them if they do occur.

3. If you call a pest management professional as soon as possible, you can avoid a widespread infestation.

4. Throw away any clutter. With less clutter you’ll be able to spot bed bugs more efficiently and they will have fewer places to hide.
