Sinus infection Diagnosis and Treatment NYC
Recent Patient Comments
I’ve suffered from a sinus infection every year for the past ten years. It was only this time that I didn’t miss the amount of work that I am used to missing at this time of year. Dr. F treated me better than most doctors have and prescribed me medicine that got me back to the office in no time. Wait? Is that good or bad? Just kidding! Thanks, again!

What is a sinus infection?
A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses. They usually develop during a cold or other viral infection. The sinuses are hollow, mucus membrane lined areas in your face. During a viral infection, they may become inflamed, causing the symptoms of sinusitis.
What are the symptoms of a sinus infection?
- Thick green or yellow mucus discharge
- Pain or discomfort in the face and/or teeth
- Stuffy nose
You may also experience the following symptoms, but not all people do:
- Cough
- Decreased sense of smell
- Feeling tired
- Pressure in your ears
- Fever
- Headache
How long will it last?
Usually the symptoms resolve within seven to ten days. An acute sinus infection lasts less than 4 weeks, while a chronic sinus infection lasts longer than 12 weeks. If you are experiencing symptoms of a sinus infection for more than 12 weeks, you should seek medical attention. It could be due to more complicated causes and need further medical attention.
How did I get a sinus infection?
Nearly all acute sinus infections, those lasting less than one month, are due to a viral infection like a cold. If you have had a sinus infection for more than 12 weeks, you are most likely suffering from a chronic sinus infection. The causes behind a chronic sinus infection include allergies, exposure to irritants, an infection, or nasal polyps.
How can I treat it at home?
You can treat your sinus infection at home with an over the counter pain medication, decongestant nasal spray, or rinsing your nose and sinuses with salt water a few times a day. Do not use the decongestant spray for more than 3 days. If you are unsure of how to clear out your sinuses with salt water, see a health care professional.
When should I go to the doctor?
You should see a doctor if the symptoms last more than seven days or if the symptoms improved but now are getting worse.
If any of the following apply to you, you should seek medical attention immediately:
- Sudden and severe pain in the head
- Difficulty seeing
- Swelling or redness around the eyes
- A fever higher than 102.5°F
- Difficulty thinking
- Difficulty breathing
What can the doctor do to treat my sinus infection?
The doctor can prescribe a nose spray with steroids to reduce the inflammation as well as antibiotics if she or he deems it necessary. If you meet any of the above criteria, there may be a much more serious underlying condition and should be investigated by a doctor.
