Smoking Cessation NYC
Recent Patient Comments
I’ve been trying to quit cigarettes for five years, so to say I was surprised when Dr. F. finally weaned me off the old cancer sticks would be an understatement. I understand that ultimately it was my decision that led to me quitting but having a great team on your side like the one at Walk In Clinic of New York really helped immensely. I would recommend the smoking cessation treatment of this clinic to anyone like me who has been trying to quit but has been unable to!

What happens in my body when I smoke?
When you smoke you are inhaling an abundance of toxic chemicals and carcinogens, including carbon monoxide, nicotine, and approximately 2500 other unnatural compounds. These all affect the body negatively.
Why should I quit smoking?
There are absolutely no health benefits of starting to smoke, yet there are an incredibly wide variety of health benefits that come from smoking cessation. Your risk for the following health conditions all decrease dramatically when you stop smoking.
1. Pulmonary disease - Your risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD), asthma, respiratory bronchiolitis, as well as many other problems with your lungs and breathing decrease dramatically when you stop smoking.
2. Cancer - Your chances of developing lung cancer are 10 to 30 TIMES that of a non-smoker. When you stop smoking, your risk for lung cancer decreases anywhere from 20-90%.
3. Cardiovascular disease- Smoking doubles your risk for developing heart disease, this includes heart attacks, stroke, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease and hardening of your arteries. However, when you stop smoking, the risk falls from the moment you stop and only increase with time. For example, in a study of a women’s risk for stroke, 2 to 4 years after they stopped smoking, their risk was the same as someone who had never smoked.
4. Peptic ulcer disease - Peptic ulcer disease can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and greater risk for abdominal cancer. Your risk for this disease decreases when you stop smoking and any ulcers you may have will heal more rapidly.
5. Type 2 Diabetes- Smoking cessation reduces this risk in a measurable amount after 5 years of smoking cessation. An estimated 10% of Type 2 Diabetes cases are due to smoking.
6. Osteoporosis - Smoking decreases bone density and increases the risk for hip fractures in women.
7. Birth defects - Smoking during pregnancy is associated with 5% of infant deaths and 10% of preterm births, as well as an increased risk for stillbirth. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should always attempt to stop smoking as soon as possible.
8. Skin wrinkling - Constant exposure to smoke damage skin and cause wrinkles. Once you stop smoking, your skin will be revitalized over time.
9. Stained teeth and fingers - As soon as you stop smoking, the appearance of your fingernails and fingers will improve.
10. Dangers of second-hand smoke - Unfortunately for the family members and friends of smokers, even second hand smoke carries risks. If you quit smoking, the people around you will be at lower risk for lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems like asthma, and a wide host of other health conditions.
Am I too old to quit smoking?
There is no age when you will not see benefits of smoking cessation. At any age, smoking cessation means a significant improvement in overall health and well-being.
What are the downsides of quitting smoking?
Compared to the positive benefits, there are very few reasons to continue smoking.
1. Modest weight gain - Some studies have shown modest weight gain in people that quit smoking. However, for your health, the benefits far outweigh the few extra pounds. Also, with your improved ability to breathe, you can exercise to ward off weight gain.
2. Nicotine withdrawal - This is only temporary, lasting between 3 days and 4 weeks.
3. Worsen ulcerative colitis - If you do have this condition it is important to speak with your doctor about a plan of action to ensure that you do not have a flare-up. However, if you do not have this, you will not get it because you stop smoking.
What can the doctor do to help?
Our doctors can help you decide on an appropriate over the counter treatment or prescribe nicotine replacement methods, bupropion, or chantix. If you are currently a smoker, you should immediately book an appointment with one of our doctors to discuss possible smoking cessation plans. If you are not interested in medications, our doctors can refer you to behavioral counselors than can assist you in a program for smoking cessation. Taking action to stop smoking is especially important if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Not only will your health begin to improve immediately after you stop smoking, but the health of your loved ones as well.
